Maltipoos 101

Crossbred group

A cross between a Maltese and Poodle (typically a Toy Poodle), the Maltipoo is a popular crossbred that comes in a variety of coat types and colors.

This combination of two somewhat similar and very smart breeds is, not surprising, a bright dog who’s relatively easy to train and generally friendly to friends and family alike. Because of their small size and fragility, they may need to be protected from small children and large dogs. They are excellent urban dogs, a good match for many in small living spaces.

What we love about Maltipoos

Smooth blend of two smart, sweet breeds

An affable and affectionate purse dog, the Maltipoo is easily spoiled. Manners training will help, as will adding tricks to their repertoire. As with other Poodle crosses, the Maltipoo may be more easily tolerated by those with allergies.

The Maltipoo goes by many names. You may hear it called a Moodle, Multapoo, or Maltipoodle. Celebrity fans of the breed have included Blake Lively, Rihanna, Ellen Degeneres, and Jessica Simpson.

Maltipoo coat care and colors

The Poodle part of the Maltipoo adds curls to the straight, silky coat of the Maltese. The result may be a coat that’s difficult to keep free of tangles. Most Maltipoos are kept clipped short by a professional groomer. While that makes coat care easier, it does mean cold dogs on winter days, so it’s best to add a sweater as needed. Additionally, acclimating puppies to having their feet handled will make a lifetime of nail trims easier.

The Maltipoo is easy to carry, but let them use those little legs for walking – it’s better for them. Smart and eager to please, Maltipoos love activities such as indoor play and games.
