Being a pet parent often means pet hair is everywhere. Even, it turns out, in some of our wackiest pet names.
This comes as no surprise. Pets wear their hair the way we wear our identities. A shaggy dog, a sleek cat or a fluffy rabbit all carry a kind of signature style that shapes how we see them and the names we choose to express their personality.
So, we combed through the Wacky Pet Names archives to see what kind of wackiness we could tease out. Meet some of our well-coiffed, wacky-named favorites.
Smile for the paw-parazzi
Some celebrities become icons not just for their talent, but for their unforgettable hair. From gravity‑defying styles to signature colors, their locks become part of pop culture history all on their own. Take for example the flowing feathered fringe of ‘70s icon Farrah Fawcett, whose name serves as the foundation for our Wacky Pet Names nominee, Farrah Pawcett. Or another era-defining signature blonde look turned wacky name, Reece Whiskerspoon, named for the star of Legally Blonde.
Occasionally, we see a mash-up name that perfectly bridges the hair divide and melds two celebs into one. Meet Lil’ Richard Simmons Sweatin’ to the Oldies, an homage to two eccentric icons of wacky curls: Little Richard and Richard Simmons.
'Staches with wacky style
Pets with mustaches have a way of looking both unintentionally dignified and hilariously wacky. Take for example Monsieur Le Colonel Moustache, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who wears his stylish ’stache like a badge of aristocratic honor. Then, there’s Whiskerus Maximus, named for a wacky reference from the cult‑classic film “Anchorman,” a movie that celebrates mustaches in a big way.
Fandom and fur
Pet owners love sprinkling references to pop culture favorites into wacky names for their pets. Many of these names include clever puns playing off the furriness of the wacky pet.
Wacky Pet Names nominee Edward Scissorpaws channels the gothic whimsy of Edward Scissorhands, evoking the film’s misunderstood hero with a name that instantly conjures images of very zany hair. For a more subdued look, there’s Hairy Pawter, a fuzzy nod to the boy wizard better known for his trademark round glasses than his untidy locks. Or the unexpected hairstyle for a pup: no hair at all, as worn by our 2020 wackiest canine name winner, Scarlett No Haira, a hairless Chinese Crested dog.
