Elbee celebrates 4 years cancer-free thanks to new treatment

“I’m writing my yearly update on our border collie Elbee, who was a patient at the CSU Animal Cancer Center four years ago. She was the first dog to receive SRT for an oral extramedullary plasmacytoma at CSU. Since the doctors could not refer to any previous oral extramedullary plasmacytomas that were treated with SRT, it was tough deciding if she should be treated with surgery or SRT. Ultimately, we decided it was worth the risk if it could save her from having half her upper jaw removed.

Elbee is a senior dog now, and I’m happy to report that she is a happy and healthy girl! I am so grateful for the compassionate and thorough care that Elbee received at CSU and the fantastic results of her treatment. Elbee is a wonderful girl, funny and smart and sensitive the way border collies can be, and she really loves chewing. I’m so thankful that her entire mouth remains intact so that she can still enjoy her daily bully stick.”

Cancer is cancer. Colorado State University’s One Cure program is founded on the principle that cancer affects all creatures and, that treatment breakthroughs come through collaboration between scientists and doctors who are working with both people and animals. This approach is known as comparative or translational oncology; the study of cancer in people and pets to benefit both species.
